Fall Yard Cleanup: Garage and Shed Organization Tips

By Di Ter Avest

Welcome to the first post in our new series on organizing outdoor spaces for fall and winter! As the weather cools down, it’s the perfect time to focus on garage and shed organization before winter rolls in. Today, we’ll cover how to store outdoor gear, garden tools, and seasonal items while keeping everything clean, safe, and easy to find.

A well-organized space isn’t just about making it look nice—it’s about creating a system that protects your items from the elements. Let’s explore how to get your garage and shed organization in tip-top shape.

What to Store in the Garage or Shed

Certain items are ideal for garage or shed storage, while others are better kept elsewhere to ensure their longevity. Garden tools and lawn equipment, like rakes, shovels, and lawnmowers, are well-suited for these spaces, but cleaning them before storing them is essential to prevent rust and dirt buildup. Seasonal items, such as holiday decorations, patio furniture, and outdoor gear, can also be safely stored in clear, labeled bins for easy access. Additionally, outdoor toys and sports gear, including bikes and soccer balls, fit perfectly in garages and sheds. Using hooks and racks to keep these items off the floor helps maximize storage space.

However, some things should not be stored in garages or sheds due to fluctuating temperatures and humidity. Paint is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather, which can make it unusable, so it’s better to store it in a climate-controlled area. Paper products, like cardboard boxes, important documents, or photographs, can become damp or attract pests, so they are better kept indoors. Similarly, food, including pet food or birdseed, should be stored inside to prevent spoilage and to avoid attracting rodents and insects.

Categorize What You’re Storing

The first step in garage and shed organization is categorizing items, making assigning storage spaces easier and ensuring similar items are grouped together. Here are a few categories to think about:

  • Garden Tools: Rakes, shovels, pruners, and hoses.
  • Lawn Equipment: Mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and other powered tools.
  • Sports Gear: Bikes, balls, helmets, and other outdoor activity gear.
  • Seasonal Decorations: Holiday lights, wreaths, and other decorations you only use for part of the year.
  • Auto Care: Car maintenance supplies like oil, windshield washer fluid, and tools for minor repairs.
  • Miscellaneous DIY Items: Paint, small tools, nails, screws, and anything you use for home improvement projects.

Creating these categories will make it much easier to store and retrieve items when you need them.

Best Ways to Keep Items Clean and Safe

Once you’ve sorted your items and know what belongs in the garage or shed, it’s time to think about how to keep everything clean, safe, and easy to find. Here are some tips for organizing and protecting your items:

  • Shelving: Sturdy shelves are perfect for storing bins, containers, and equipment that you need to keep off the floor. Opt for adjustable shelves so you can accommodate items of various sizes.
  • Pegboards: Installing a pegboard on the wall is a great way to organize smaller tools like hand trowels, shears, or hammers. The best part? You can arrange and rearrange tools easily based on how often you use them.
  • Labeled Bins: Use clear plastic bins with tight lids to store seasonal decorations, outdoor toys, or other items that need protection from dust and pests. Don’t forget to label each bin so you know exactly what’s inside without digging through it.
  • Hooks and Racks: Hang items like garden hoses, bikes, or ladders on sturdy wall hooks or racks. This will keep bulky items off the ground and free up valuable floor space.
  • Weather Protection: Make sure your garage or shed is weatherproof, with no leaks or drafts, especially for items like power tools or lawn equipment that can be damaged by moisture. Consider using a dehumidifier or moisture absorbers in your shed to keep humidity levels low.
  • Tool Maintenance: Before storing tools and lawn equipment for the winter, take a few minutes to clean them. Wipe down tools, sharpen blades, and oil any moving parts to prevent rust. For power equipment, follow manufacturer guidelines to drain gas or add a fuel stabilizer.

Stay Organized Year-Round

The key to maintaining a tidy garage or shed is to stay consistent. Once you’ve gone through your fall yard cleanup, take time every season to assess your space, reorganize, and clean. Having labeled bins, designated hooks, and clear shelves will help keep things in place year-round.

Remember, a well-organized garage or shed can save you time, extend the life of your tools, and prevent clutter from taking over. By setting up a system now, you’ll be ready to roll when spring comes back around.
