There’s something a little scary about walking into a house and thinking… “What did we just do?” That was us. We bought a fixer-upper. The house no one wanted. It had been sitting on the market for two months, sold as-is, filled with 50+ years of clutter, and in need of a lot of work.
And yet… we said yes.
Not because it was perfect—but because of what was right. The location felt right. The yard was exactly what we wanted for our kids. And maybe most importantly, our kids wouldn’t have to change schools.
So we chose potential over perfection.
The Reality Hit Fast
The same afternoon we got the keys, a dumpster was already in the driveway. No easing into it. No slow start. We got straight to work.
My husband, my kids, and I started clearing things out immediately—and by the end of that first day, half of a 30-yard dumpster was already full.
The next morning, I had one of my team members come help, and by noon, the first dumpster was gone… and a second one was already being delivered.
Within 48 hours, we had filled two 30-yard dumpsters.
Let that sink in!
The Hard Part No One Talks About
We went in with good intentions, tried to save what we could. We also set aside items to donate. But the truth is… a lot of it couldn’t be saved. The house had been sitting empty for so long. Many items were moldy, damaged, or affected by mice. It wasn’t just clutter—it was years of neglect.
And even though I help clients declutter and organize homes every day… this was the biggest job I’ve ever taken on. Not just physically—but mentally. There were moments I felt completely overwhelmed.
Moments where we looked at each other and thought, “Did we make the wrong decision?”, “Can we really turn this into our family home?”
When the Shift Happened
But then something changed. After about three days… I could finally see it. Not the mess. Not the overwhelm. But the vision I had all along.
As the items started leaving the house, something else started to lift too—the mental weight.
The space felt lighter. I felt clearer. I could finally think about how we wanted to live in this home. All the projects we were going to tackle.
It’s incredible to experience firsthand how a clean, clutter-free space can completely shift how you see a house. I know that if the owners had cleared the junk and cleaned the house before listing, they would have sold it for much more than we paid.
I always tell my clients this… but living it on this level was something else.
What This Experience Reminded Me
A home doesn’t have to start out perfect to become something beautiful.
Sometimes, it looks like chaos first.
Other times, it feels overwhelming and you question everything.
But when you start clearing—little by little—you create space for clarity, for vision, and for something new.
This house may have been the one no one wanted, but for us, it’s becoming exactly what we needed.
