Winterizing Your Outdoor Space

By Di Ter Avest

As the colder months approach, it’s time to start winterizing your outdoor space. With a little bit of planning, you can keep your patio furniture, cushions, and outdoor toys in great shape, making spring setup so much easier when the warmer weather returns. In this post, we’ll walk you through two key parts of fall prep: how to store outdoor furniture and how to organize outdoor toys and sports gear for the off-season. The good news is, it’s easier than you might think. Let’s dive into how to get started!

Storing Outdoor Furniture and Cushions for the Cold Months

Taking care of your outdoor furniture before winter ensures it lasts for years, and a few simple steps can help you winterize your patio like a pro.

Start by cleaning everything thoroughly, using mild soap and water on tables and chairs, and spot-cleaning or hosing off cushions—just be sure to let everything dry completely before storing to prevent mold. During the winter, it’s also important to periodically check on your furniture, especially after heavy snow or rain, to ensure it’s not accumulating moisture or damage.

Next, cover or store your furniture in a shed or garage, or use weatherproof covers, ensuring they’re secure to avoid wind damage. Protect cushions and smaller accessories by storing them in deck boxes, sheds, or weatherproof storage bags to keep them dry.

Finally, tidy up and reorganize your patio by putting away garden décor or outdoor rugs, and consider stackable storage bins or shelves to keep things neat over the winter.

Organizing Outdoor Toys and Sports Gear

When the time comes to organize the kids’ outdoor toys, bikes, and sports gear to prevent clutter, start by decluttering and donating items your kids have outgrown, like old bikes and scooters; local charities or second-hand stores are great options for drop-off.

Next, designate storage zones in your garage or shed for different types of gear, using hooks for bikes and helmets and large bins for smaller toys—don’t forget to label everything for easy access come spring.

To maximize space, use vertical storage solutions like wall-mounted racks and pegboards for hanging sports gear and smaller items.

Lastly, if you lack indoor storage, consider weatherproof storage solutions such as durable bins or containers that can stay outside, perfect for toys that don’t require indoor storage.
