Summer sounds dreamy—long sunny days, barefoot kids, and a slower pace. But let’s be real: prepping your home and routine for summer can feel like trying to pack three seasons into one weekend. Suddenly, your house is bursting with beach towels, the backyard looks like a toy aisle exploded, and your usual schedule is out the window. Sound familiar?
If you’re feeling the chaos creep in before summer even begins, you’re not alone. This post will walk you through four common mistakes moms make when prepping for summer—and more importantly, how to avoid them with simple, doable fixes. Let’s make space for more fun and less stress.
Trying to Do It All in One Day
You decide today is the day: everything is getting decluttered, organized, and ready for summer. Then, four hours later, you’re standing in a pile of pool toys, half-finished tasks, and zero energy left.
The Fix: Give yourself permission to slow down. Try 15–30 minute “decluttering sprints.” Start small—maybe the entryway where shoes pile up or the corner with board games. You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done in short, focused bursts. Use a timer and keep a donation bag nearby. Decluttering doesn’t have to take all day to be effective.
Overloading the House With Summer Gear
It starts innocently enough: a new beach umbrella, the cutest pool float, another set of sand toys, etc. Before you know it, your garage or hallway is full of stuff no one actually uses.
The Fix: Be intentional. Ask yourself: Did we use this last year? Will we use it this year? If the inflatable pool from 2020 is still sitting unopened, it’s time to say goodbye.
Create a “summer essentials” bin and limit gear to what fits inside. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t stay. This makes packing for outings quicker and less stressful.
Skipping the Routine Shift
Summer means later bedtimes, different wake-up times, and often, a change in daily flow. But if your routines stay stuck in school-year mode, things can feel off.
The Fix: Rework your routines to match summer life. Think about what your mornings and evenings need now. It could be sunscreen by the door, extra water bottles prepped, or quiet time baskets for afternoon downtime. Post a simple visual checklist for kids—morning and evening. It empowers them and keeps everyone on the same page.
Forgetting Self-Care
You’ve organized the kids’ toys, the patio, and the snack drawer—but what about you? Moms often put themselves last when summer starts, thinking, I’ll rest once everything else is done.
The Fix: It’s crucial to build self-care into your home and schedule. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Maybe it’s a cozy corner for your morning coffee, a basket of your favorite summer reads, or even setting ‘quiet time’ where everyone recharges. Schedule your own ‘fun time’ each week—even 30 minutes counts. You deserve it, and it’s important for your well-being.
