Mudroom & Cleaning Cabinet Organizing Makeover

By Di Ter Avest

If your mudroom feels more like a cluttered storage zone than the welcoming, functional space it’s meant to be, you’re not alone. Mudrooms are one of the busiest areas of the home, and it’s easy for shoes, backpacks, and cleaning supplies to pile up. In today’s post, I’m sharing one of my recent favorite client projects, where we transformed a chaotic mudroom and cleaning cabinet into a calm, organized space. If you’re searching for mudroom organization ideas, you’ll love this makeover!

The Virtual Consultation

Every project starts with a chat, and this one was no different. During the virtual consultation, we asked our client to walk us through their mudroom and cleaning cabinet. We discussed the pain points, their goals (a calm, organized space), and their vision for how they wanted the space to feel. This process helps us understand how they use the area so we can create a system that works for their lifestyle.

The Mood Board & Shopping Guide

Before we rolled up our sleeves, we put together a mood board and shopping guide. This process included product recommendations, layout ideas, and a few fun touches to make sure the makeover matched their style. Our goal is always to stay aligned with what the client wants so they feel excited about the changes!

The Hands-On Session

When the big day arrived, we dove right in! One of the best parts of working with us? Our clients don’t have to lift a finger unless they want to. The client was working from home for this project, so we handled everything, checking in with them only during the purging process to ensure we weren’t tossing or relocating anything important to them – this collaboration ensures the space works for their needs. One of the perks of working with us is that you don’t have to stress about doing it yourself!

We started with a decluttering process, going through every single item in the mudroom and cleaning cabinet. Shoes that no longer fit, duplicate cleaning supplies, and forgotten items were sorted into piles to donate, relocate, or toss.

Next, we set up zones to keep everything organized:

  • Shoes and backpacks near the entryway.
  • Cleaning supplies grouped by type.
  • Seasonal items and decor were stored in another closet.

Throughout the session, we checked in with the client to ensure we weren’t getting rid of anything important.

Implementing Organizing Supplies

Now comes the fun part—bringing in the organizing supplies! One of our favorite products for this project was a set of deep, clear bins we used on the top shelves. These are a total game-changer for deep cabinets. Instead of losing items in the back, the bins make it easy to grab what you need without a struggle.

Creating a Peaceful Welcome

To wrap it all up, we moved items that didn’t belong—things like sports gear, out-of-season items, and random “just in case” stuff—back to their proper places in the house. This step made all the difference. With unnecessary clutter gone, the mudroom and cleaning cabinet felt open, calm, and so much more welcoming. Now, when our client comes home, they’re greeted by a peaceful, functional space instead of chaos.

The Result

Our client was thrilled with their newly organized space! It’s easy to maintain, everything is accessible, and the mudroom now feels like a little haven rather than a dumping ground.

If you’re dreaming about transforming an area in your home, let’s chat! Whether it’s a mudroom, closet, or something else, we’d love to help create a space that feels good for you. 😊 We work with clients in Baltimore City, Baltimore County

Mudroom Organization Ideas You Can Try Today

If this makeover has you inspired, here are a few mudroom organization ideas to help you create your own functional space:

  1. Declutter first. Let go of items you don’t need, so you’re only organizing what matters.
  2. Use clear storage. Bins with labels keep everything visible and easy to grab.
  3. Add hooks. Wall hooks are a lifesaver for coats, bags, and keys.
  4. Incorporate a bench. A bench with hidden storage adds both seating and functionality.
  5. Make it welcoming. A cozy rug or small decor touch can elevate the space.
