The Ultimate Sports Mom Bag Essentials: IKEA edition!

With the kids doing sports more often this year, I decided to put together an ultimate sports mom bag with all the essentials. So, my daughter is doing gymnastics, and my son joined a soccer club; with that, we are now always on the go, shuttling them to practices, games, and tournaments. 

With a hectic schedule, we need a trusty sidekick to help us stay organized, prepared, and ready for anything. That’s where a sports mom bag comes in! I went to IKEA Baltimore to get the essential items every sports mom should have in her bag, ensuring we can tackle any situation that comes our way.

If you are in the same boat as us this year, keep reading so you can recreate or adapt our setup to fit your needs. 

Backpacks

You will need a lightweight, spacious backpack to corral all the items in your sports mom bag. Look for a backpack with multiple compartments and pockets to help you stay organized. A comfortable fit is also essential, as you’ll carry it around for hours on game days. 

I also use a smaller IKEA backpack for my daughter’s gymnastic essentials since she attends class right after school. In her backpack, we keep her gymnastic outfit, flip-flops, hair ties, towel, and a book to read while she waits for her class.

Blanket and waterproof picnic blanket

Sitting on the hard, cold bleachers for hours during practices and games can be uncomfortable. A blanket and a picnic blanket with waterproof backing can make the experience much more enjoyable on those chilly days.

Umbrellas

Don’t let a sudden downpour catch you off guard. A compact, sturdy umbrella can be a lifesaver when you’re out on the field on sunny or rainy days.

Reusable waterproof bag

When the game is over, you’ll likely have a mix of clean and dirty items to carry. Reusable waterproof bags help keep everything separated and organized.

Eating on the go

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on hot summer days. Keep a reusable water bottle for each family member in the backpack. With the same idea, you never know when hunger might strike, so keep a stash of healthy snacks in your bag. We love bringing fresh, cold fruits in the thermos. Other options are granola bars and nuts to keep the whole family fueled.

First aid & personal kits

Sports accidents can happen, and a basic first aid kit is essential. Your kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any items your child might need. Your personal kit should also have sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, sunglasses, a hat to shield yourself from the elements, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, etc.

Extra clothing & team uniform

Kids are notorious for getting dirty or wet during sports. Bring an extra set of clothing for your child, their other uniforms (in case they need to change the color), a hand towel, and a spare t-shirt for yourself in case of spills or unexpected rain. Keep them separate in travel cube organizers to find what you need quickly. 

Entertainment for Siblings & Power Bank

If younger children get bored at their sibling’s games and practices, bring some entertainment like coloring books, toys, or a tablet to keep them occupied. You’ll want to ensure your electronics stay charged, so grabbing a portable charger can be a game-changer when your battery is running low.

As you can see, being a sports mom is a rewarding but demanding role. By keeping your sports mom bag stocked with these essentials, you’ll be ready for whatever challenges and surprises come your way during game days and practices. With a well-prepared bag, you can focus on what really matters – supporting your child and creating cherished memories together on and off the field.
