How to Organize Your Home Without Plastic Containers

As we gear up to celebrate Earth Day this year with the theme “Planet vs. Plastics,” let’s chat about how to organize your home without plastic containers and still keep it beautiful, cohesive, and organized. Yep, you heard me right! Most organized spaces we see, and in my case post, on social media involve tons of clear plastic containers, bins, etc. But I believe that in the near future, we will have more and more beautiful storage products that are more eco-friendly and use less plastic.

If you already have plastic containers and love them, that is great. I have them, too! But what if we started looking for more eco-friendly materials starting today? By doing so, we can reduce our carbon footprint, contribute to a healthier planet, and even save money in the long run. Below are some easy ideas to get us started.

Glass Jars

Repurposing glass jars from things like pasta sauces, jams, and pickles is eco-friendly and super practical. They come in various sizes, making them perfect for storing everything from dry goods like rice and pasta to homemade sauces and leftovers. Plus, they’re transparent, so you can easily see what’s inside. If repurposing jars is not the vibe you want for your kitchen, consider buying glass containers instead of plastic ones.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel containers are like the superheroes of the kitchen. They’re durable, easy to clean, and versatile. Whether you’re meal prepping for the week or storing drygoods, these containers have got you covered. Plus, they come in a range of sizes and shapes, so you can find the perfect fit for your needs.

Bamboo

Bamboo baskets and containers are not just eco-friendly, they’re also stylish and functional solutions to home organization. With their natural aesthetic and versatile design, they seamlessly integrate into any room while providing durable storage for blankets, toys, toiletries, and more. Their stackable nature maximizes space utilization, making them ideal for closets, pantries, and bookshelves. By choosing bamboo, you’re not only enhancing your home’s aesthetics but also making an environmentally responsible choice that reduces your carbon footprint, as bamboo is a renewable resource requiring minimal resources to cultivate. With easy maintenance and long-lasting durability, bamboo baskets and containers are the perfect eco-friendly addition to any home seeking both style and sustainability.

Fabric

Fabric baskets are not only practical for organizing toys, linens, and other household items but also add a touch of coziness to any room. Choose from a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures to suit your style, then use them to corral items in your living room, bedroom, or kids’ playroom. They’re lightweight, collapsible, and oh-so-versatile.

Wooden

Wooden crates are a stylish and sustainable alternative to plastic storage bins. Use them to store books, magazines, blankets, or anything else that needs a home. Plus, they’re stackable, so you can create custom storage solutions to fit your space. Whether you paint them, stain them, or leave them natural, wooden crates add a touch of rustic charm to any room.

Metal

Metal crates are a stylish and sustainable alternative to plastic storage bins. Use them to store books, magazines, blankets, or anything else that needs a home. With their durability and versatility, they’re perfect for corralling items in your living room, pantry, bedroom, or home office. And just like bamboo and fabric options, metal crates offer an eco-friendly alternative to plastic containers.

Remember, you don’t need to go out and get all new items; that would actually be worse for the environment. Take it slow, swap things out as you go when the plastic breaks, and don’t stress about being perfect. Every little change you make, no matter how small, is a step towards a more sustainable future. Your efforts are significant and appreciated!
