If you’ve ever felt like May hits you like a wave you didn’t see coming, you’re not alone. This May reset routine for busy moms is exactly what I lean on when life feels full—end-of-school chaos, papers everywhere, events on the calendar, and summer plans creeping in.
This time of year can feel like December… just warmer and with field days instead of holiday parties. So instead of trying to do it all, I focus on doing the right things—the ones that keep my home calm and my mind clear.
Let me walk you through the 10 things I’m doing this May to stay grounded, organized, and present.
Why the May Reset Routine for Busy Moms Matters
Every year, May sneaks up on me.
One minute, we’re settling into spring routines. The next? There are permission slips on the counter, teacher appreciation gifts to figure out, and a calendar that feels… packed.
I used to try to “push through” and just keep up. But that usually led to burnout, clutter piling up, and me feeling behind in my own home.
Now, I approach May differently.
Instead of reacting, I reset.
This May reset routine for busy moms helps me slow things down just enough to stay in control—even when life is moving fast.
10 Things I’m Doing This May (Simple + Realistic)
Here’s exactly what I’m focusing on this month. Nothing complicated—just intentional.
1. I’m doing a quick paper reset every week
School papers multiply fast this time of year, and if I don’t stay on top of them, they take over the kitchen counters. Once a week, I sit down for 10–15 minutes to sort, toss, and save only what truly matters. This small habit keeps the clutter from building up and helps me actually enjoy the memories I choose to keep.
2. I’m creating a simple “end-of-school” bin
Instead of letting forms, invitations, and little reminders float around the house, I give them one home. I use a simple bin or basket where everything school-related goes as soon as it comes in. It makes it so much easier to find what I need without the last-minute scramble.
3. I’m planning outfits for key events ahead of time
May is full of events, and getting dressed can quickly become a stress point. I take a few minutes at the beginning of the week to plan outfits for anything important coming up. It saves time, reduces decision fatigue, and makes those busy mornings feel a little calmer.
4. I’m simplifying meals (on purpose)
This is not the season to try new, complicated recipes every night. I lean into simple meals we already love and repeat them without guilt. Keeping food easy gives me more energy for everything else that May brings.
5. I’m doing a mini declutter in high-traffic spaces
Instead of trying to organize the whole house, I focus on the areas we use the most. A quick 10-minute reset of the kitchen counters, entryway, or backpacks can make a huge difference. These small resets help the entire home feel more in control.
6. I’m setting a weekly “family reset hour”
I no longer carry the weight of resetting the house alone. Once a week, we all spend an hour putting things back where they belong and getting the house back to baseline. It teaches responsibility and makes the process faster and lighter.
7. I’m mapping out summer plans loosely
I don’t create a strict schedule, but I do like to see what’s coming. I jot down camps, trips, and important dates so nothing sneaks up on me. Having a loose plan helps me feel prepared without feeling overwhelmed.
8. I’m saying no more often
May can quickly become overbooked if I’m not careful. Before committing to anything, I pause and ask if it truly fits our family’s energy and priorities. Protecting my time has been one of the most powerful shifts for my peace.
9. I’m keeping a “brain dump” list
When everything is swirling in my head, I get it out on paper. I keep a running list of tasks, reminders, and random thoughts so I don’t have to hold it all mentally. It instantly creates clarity and helps me focus on what actually needs to get done.
10. I’m prioritizing small moments of rest
Even in a busy season, I make space for small breaks. It might be a quiet cup of coffee, sitting outside for a few minutes, or simply pausing between tasks. These little moments help me reset so I can show up better for everything else.
What Helps This Routine Actually Work
There’s a reason simple routines like this make such a difference.
Research from the American Psychological Association shows that having predictable routines can reduce stress and improve overall well-being—especially for parents managing multiple responsibilities.
That’s why I don’t overhaul everything in May. I stick to small, repeatable actions.
And honestly? That’s what keeps things sustainable.
