The holiday season is here, and it’s the perfect time to slow down and reflect on what we’re truly grateful for. But if you’re anything like me (juggling kids, work, and the endless holiday to-do lists), finding a moment to breathe, let alone practice gratitude, can feel like a challenge. That’s why I want to introduce you to something that’s made a big difference in my life: gratitude journaling.
What is Gratitude Journaling?
Gratitude journaling is simply the act of writing down things you are thankful for each day. It can be as simple as jotting down three things that brought you joy or comfort, even if it’s something small like a hot cup of coffee or a sunny day. The key is to take a few moments to reflect on the positives in your life, helping you cultivate a more thankful and positive mindset.
Why Gratitude Journaling Works
When you’re in the thick of holiday prep—decorating, gift shopping, and planning meals—it’s easy to focus on the stress. Gratitude journaling shifts your focus away from what’s going wrong and centers it on what’s going right. Science even backs this up! Regularly practicing gratitude has been linked to improved mental health, better sleep, and increased happiness.
As busy moms, it’s often hard to find time for ourselves. But a quick gratitude journaling session can be your moment of calm in a hectic day. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reconnect with what matters most.
Join the Gratitude Journaling Challenge
I know how overwhelming the holiday season can get, so I’ve created a Gratitude Journaling Challenge just for you. This week-long challenge is designed to be simple, flexible, and doable—because let’s be real, we’re all juggling a million things.
Here’s how it works:
- Set aside 5 minutes each day for the next 7 days.
- Grab a notebook or open a notes app on your phone—whatever works for you.
- Each day, write down 3 things you’re grateful for. It could be a big win (your kid finally nailing that school project) or something small (the laughter at dinner time). Nothing is too big or too small to count.
- Reflect on why each item made your list. Adding a sentence or two about why you’re thankful will help you feel the gratitude even more deeply.
I’ll be sharing my own gratitude journaling moments on Instagram this week, and I’d love for you to join in! Share your own lists (or keep them private—whatever feels right for you) and tag me so we can inspire each other.
Tips to Make Gratitude Journaling a Habit
- Keep it simple: You don’t need a fancy journal (unless that’s your thing!). A scrap of paper or a digital note is just as effective.
- Do it with your kids: Encourage your little ones to join you. It’s a great way to teach them about gratitude during the holiday season.
- Be consistent but flexible: Aim to write every day, but don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. The goal is progress, not perfection.
The Gift of a Thankful Heart
The best part of gratitude journaling isn’t just the list of things you’re thankful for—it’s the mindset shift that comes along with it. You’ll start noticing more of the good, even on the hard days. You’ll feel lighter and more present, able to savor the moments that matter most.
So, let’s take on this gratitude journaling challenge together. For the next week, give yourself the gift of reflection, thankfulness, and a few minutes of peace each day. I can’t wait to hear how it goes for you!
Ready to get started? Grab your journal (or open that app), and let’s start cultivating a thankful heart, one note of gratitude at a time.
