Who has never thought, “Other moms seem to have it all together; why can’t I?” We all experience that, but we might not always admit that we fall into a comparison trap from time to time. You know what I’m talking about—the endless scroll through social media where every other mom seems to have her life and home perfectly decorated and organized, with tons of space, while you’re over here just trying to find matching socks or fit just one more winter jacket in the tiny closet.
It’s so easy to fall into this trap, especially when it comes to home organization. We see those beautifully curated spaces on Instagram or Pinterest and think, “Why can’t my home look like that?” But here’s the thing: those pictures only show a small snippet of reality, and as a professional organizer, I know how it is to curate the perfect shot to post on social media. Behind the scenes, those homes are just as lived in as yours, and the moms are probably just as frazzled and overwhelmed as we are to keep up with it.
So, what makes us feel this way? It’s that nagging voice in our heads telling us that we’re not good enough. We compare our worst moments to someone else’s highlight reel, forgetting that everyone has their own struggles. But instead of letting that voice take over, we can choose to replace it with a more empowering thought. What if you think,“I’m doing the best I can, and that’s enough” instead?
Personally, I’ve found that embracing imperfection is key to managing this struggle in my own life. Despite all my effort, systems, and organizing skills, my home might not always be magazine-worthy, but it’s filled with love and laughter, and that’s what truly matters.
So, what can you do to escape the comparison trap and find peace in your home organization journey? Here are three easy-to-do tasks to get you started:
When in doubt, declutter
You will be surprised by how much space, order, and peace of mind you will gain by just letting go of items in your home that you don’t need, use, or love.
Celebrate Your Wins
Take a moment each day to celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Maybe you finally tackled that pile of laundry or cleared off the kitchen counter—go you!
Set Realistic Goals
Instead of aiming for picture-perfect, set realistic goals that work for you and your family. Maybe it’s dedicating 15 minutes each day to decluttering or implementing a simple organizing system that fits your lifestyle.
Remember, you’re doing an amazing job, even on the days when it feels like everything is falling apart. Embrace the chaos, celebrate the wins, and know that you’re not alone in this journey. We’re all just doing the best we can, and that’s more than enough.
