Mindset change #1: “I’ve lost myself in motherhood; I don’t even know what I want anymore.”

Motherhood is a beautiful journey filled with love, joy, and countless unforgettable moments. But let’s be honest: Sometimes, being a mom can leave you feeling a bit lost. Have you ever thought, “I’ve lost myself in motherhood; I don’t even know what I want anymore”? You’re not alone. Many moms feel this way, and it can be overwhelming.

Welcome to our Mindset Series, where we are sharing common mindsets moms have that are holding them back and how to reframe those thoughts to have healthier and more organized lifestyles

Feeling lost in motherhood happens in different ways. You might feel like your dreams got shoved aside for your kids’ needs. With all the demands and pressures, it’s easy to forget who you are beyond being a mom. You crave the freedom to chase your passions but don’t know where to start.

In my own life, figuring out this whole mom identity thing has been a rollercoaster. But I’ve learned some lessons along the way. Taking time for myself has been key. Whether it’s getting a solo lunch after an in-home session with a client or scribbling in a journal for a few minutes each day, it helps me remember what I’m about. I also enjoy some quiet time in the evening when I can decompress and evaluate my day—these things remind me I matter, too.

Setting small goals, like finally starting that thing I’ve always wanted to do or picking up a new hobby, has been a game-changer. Each step forward reminds me I’m not losing myself; I’m just growing alongside this fantastic mom lifestyle.

So, how to change that mindset?

What if instead of sinking into the idea that you’re losing yourself, you try flipping the script? Tell yourself, “I’m changing and adapting, not losing who I am.”

Spend some time reconnecting with yourself. Whether it’s a few quiet moments to organize your thoughts on a piece of paper or to meditate, ask yourself what really lights you up beyond mom duties and what makes you happy.

Now, I want to leave you with homework. What if you spent some time setting small goals with bite-sized tasks to help you chase your personal dreams? Break down the big stuff into doable steps. It could be taking a class, volunteering, or trying a hobby. Each little win brings you closer to feeling like yourself again.

As you know, being a mom is amazing, but it’s not all you are. Acknowledge the struggle of losing yourself in motherhood, then kick it to the curb. It is time to rediscover who you are beyond being a mom. You’ll find yourself again through self-reflection, self-care, and setting small goals. You’re not losing yourself; you’re growing into the best version of yourself, both as a mom and woman.
